2008 Cocalico Democrats Scholarship Award

On Wednesday evening May 28th, the Cocalico Democrats presented their second annual Scholarship award for $500, to Lindsay Lightcap. Lindsay is a graduating senior at Cocalico High School who is pursuing a career in Music Education.

The criteria for the award was to write an essay using the song “Imagine” by John Lennon, as the basis for the essay. The applicants were asked to “imagine” themselves in our community in the future and how they would utilize their music or art to help this community and the world “be as one.” Lindsay has already proven her commitment by being an active member of Cocalico High School and the Cocalico area, through her work with her Church, various school activities, and SADD. This volunteer work was a very important part of the eventual decision, as well as her 3.42 Grade Average. However in her essay, Lindsay proved that she was a young woman whose dream is to touch the future by teaching children to broaden their horizons through education and the acceptance of people who are different. We congratulate Lindsay and support her efforts in making her dream a reality.

We would also like to congratulate the graduating class of 2008 in all of our area schools wish you the best in your future endeavors.

Bruce Slater in Cocalico

Bruce Slater attended a Friend Raiser on Monday May 19th held at the home of Dick & Rosemarie Lewis in Reinholds. The Friend Raiser was attended by committee persons and Democrats residing in the Cocalico District.  Slater discussed a wide range of issues with club members and voters. Of deep concern was rising gasoline and diesel prices, health care and the war in Iraq. Bruce pledged to represent their issues in Congress. He told his audience, "My campaign depends on small contributions from voters. I will not take large contributions from special interests like my opponent has done for years. Joe Pitts has taken over $130,000 form pharmaceutical companies in the years he has been in Congress. That is why you and I pay exorbitant prices for our prescriptions."

Committee Person Training

Lois Herr and Ken Ralph were came out to the Reamstown community center and did a power point presentation for Democrat committee people.

Cocalico Democrats keep on growing

Our February 26th meeting held at the Reamstown community center in East Cocalico was a full table.  it is good to see more and more Democrats joining our club.

Lancaster County Democratic Committee Endorsement Convention

Was held on Saturday February 2 at the Lancaster Host Resort & Conference Center.

The Lancaster County Democratic Committee endorsed Jack Wagner for Auditor General and John Morganelli for Attorney General. Both Wagner and Morganelli were endorsed by the PA State Democrats three weeks ago at the State Convention

Bruce Slater, a Narvon native, was endorsed by the Lancaster County delegates to compete against Joe Pitts for the 16th district Congressional seat.

In the only contested statewide race, John Cordisco edged out Rob McCord for Treasurer and received the Lancaster County endorsement

Lee Heffner was endorsed for the second time to run against Tom Creighton for the 37th House district. Lee's advocacy for property tax relief, healthcare reform, and reform of the state's education system were the reasons that the Intelligencer Journal endorsed him in 2006 over Creighton.
